The Weight We Carry
Have you ever felt so overloaded that you don’t even know where you’re going anymore—just pushing through, eyes down, carrying more than your fair share? That’s the energy of the Ten of Wands, and it’s the card that showed up for the collective this week
This card speaks to burnout, hyper-independence, and the invisible emotional loads we carry for others. It’s the feeling of being the strong one, the dependable one, the one who always shows up—until your back, your spirit, and your joy start to suffer.
This week, let’s take a closer look at the Ten of Wands and explore why so many of us are feeling this way, how to recognize it in ourselves, and what we can do to finally put some of that weight down.
Symbolism & Meaning
In the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, the Ten of Wands shows a man hunched over, carrying a bundle of heavy sticks. His back is bent, his head is down, and even though there’s a house in the distance, he can’t see it—his vision is blocked byhis burden.
It's a hauntingly accurate metaphor for what so many of us go through. We carry emotional burdens, unpaid labor, family responsibilities, work expectations, spiritual obligations, and more. And often, we take it all on alone.
This card isn’t about weakness. It’s about the moment you realize that just because you can carry it all doesn’t mean you should.
The Ten of Wands often comes up for people who feel like the world will fall apart if they stop holding it together- Spiritual leaders, empaths, and healers who feel responsible for everyone else’s energy- Parents, caregivers, and overachievers who’ve never been taught how to rest.
And yes, full transparency: it came up for me at a time when I was experiencing serious back pain. Not from an injury, but from constantly pushing, carrying, overdoing.
I’m 4’11”—my body is small, and yet somehow I keep trying to carry a whole world on my shoulders. Sound familiar?
Our bodies often speak when our spirits are silenced. The pain in my back was a message: this isn’t sustainable. I knew better—but sometimes knowing isn’t enough when you’re wired to go, help, fix, and serve.
The truth is, the Ten of Wands is not a punishment. It’s a moment of awareness. It says: you’re nearing the finish line, but you don’t have to crawl across it bleeding.
It’s okay to stop. It’s okay to put something down. It’s okay to ask for help. And if your burdens aren’t even yours? Even better reason to set them down
.This week, I invite you to look at what you're carrying:- What feels heavy but non-essential?- What are you doing out of obligation instead of desire?- Where are you saying yes when your body screams no?
Witchy Wisdom & Homework
Here’s your magical assignment this week: Name one burden that isn’t truly yours, write it down and burn it, saying aloud or under your breath, "I release what isn't mine and call my energy back to me", or, if you want, you can simply visualize yourself handing it back to the universe.
Light a candle, hold a stone, whisper a prayer—whatever feels powerful to you.
You don’t have to save everyone. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to be held.
And if you're feeling this message deep in your bones—especially if you’re dealing with burnout, decision fatigue, or just don’t know where to go next—that may be your intuition nudging you to go deeper.
