You’re Allowed to Begin Without a Plan

Every year, right about now, I start hearing the same tired language everywhere:discipline, goals, grind, fix yourself, do better this time.
And every year, I want to gently say—that’s not how real change actually works.
This week’s card is The Fool, and it couldn’t be more perfect for the New Year. Not because it promises success. Not because it guarantees results. But because it gives you something far more important:
Permission.
The Fool Is Not Careless—He’s Unburdened
People love to describe The Fool as reckless or naive, but that’s never been my experience with this card.
The Fool is someone who has learned enough, survived enough, and carried enough—and is now willing to step forward without dragging every old story behind them.
He doesn’t leap because he’s careless. He steps because he’s no longer willing to stay stuck.
Why Resolutions Feel So Heavy
Most New Year’s resolutions are rooted in quiet shame.
“I should be better by now.”
“I failed last year.”
“This time I have to get it right.”
The Fool doesn’t speak that language. He asks instead, “What do I want to try next?”
A Personal Note
I’ve reached an age where I’ve started more chapters than I ever imagined I would. Some exciting. Some terrifying. Some after endings I didn’t ask for.
The years that changed me most were never the years I had the best plan. They were the years I trusted myself enough to begin anyway.
Beginner Energy Is Sacred
The Fool carries beginner energy—curious, flexible, open, alive. If you feel burned out or stuck, it may be because you haven’t let yourself be new in a long time.
Questions to Sit With
What would it feel like to start lighter this year?
Where am I waiting for permission I don’t actually need?
What am I curious about—even if it scares me a little?
A Gentle Invitation
If you’re standing at the edge of a new chapter and feeling unsure, tarot can help you hear yourself more clearly. If you feel called to a one-on-one reading, I’d be honored to sit with you.
You don’t have to leap.
You just have to be willing to begin.
